What If Your Phone Kept Your Secrets Too?

This August carries a legal deadline as well as a seasonal one. The EU AI Act reaches full enforcement this month, reinforcing a principle GDPR already implied, that the safest place for your data is wherever it never has to leave. That shift has been building all year, showing up in AI and attention tools designed around keeping your information local rather than sending it off to a server.

This edition looks at three boundaries worth building this month, physical, inbox, and data, with one tool for each.

Boundary 1: Physical Brick

Screen Time limits tend to fail because overriding them takes one tap and no accountability. Brick works differently. It's a small magnetic device with an NFC chip, and tapping your phone to it locks your chosen apps until you physically return and tap again.

Apple Intelligence, Google's Gemini Nano, and standalone apps like Enclave AI now run entire conversations, transcriptions, and summaries directly on your phone or laptop's own chip, with no server round-trip and no cloud storage of what you said. The on-device AI market is projected to grow roughly fivefold by the early 2030s, driven by regulation as much as by demand.

The trade-off is real: on-device models are smaller and less capable on genuinely complex reasoning than the largest cloud systems. For everyday tasks like drafting a message, summarizing a call, or transcribing a voice note, though, most people notice little difference in quality, while the privacy difference is architectural rather than promised. When a feature keeps working in airplane mode, that's the signal your data stayed put.
